Nigerian Singer Arrested, Detained Over Alleged Defamation Of Taye Currency
According to Ireporter Online, the Nigeria Police Force has taken singer Rolex Dee into custody over allegations of defamation and online harassment involving fellow artiste, Taye Currency.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the arrest, dismissing claims circulating on social media that the singer was unlawfully apprehended, and cautioned that such reports could mislead the public. Authorities stated that the case began after a formal petition was filed by Taye Currency, an Ibadan-based musician, accusing Rolex Dee of damaging his reputation, engaging in cyberbullying, and issuing threats across various social media platforms.
The police further disclosed that the suspect was traced to Lagos and subsequently arrested. The development followed a widely circulated interview he granted on the Agbaletu programme, which gained significant online traction and intensified public reactions to the allegations.
Security officials explained that statements made during the broadcast were considered potentially harmful and contributed to the escalation of the matter, prompting further investigative action. The police also noted that the reports alleging irregularities in the arrest were unverified and capable of misleading the public.
“The news is unverified reports capable of misleading the public,” the command stated, adding that the remarks made during the programme had been widely shared online, thereby increasing the impact of the alleged misconduct.
