Dr. Peter Akpe has officially been sworn in as the sixth Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State following his clearance by the State House of Assembly on Tuesday. The swearing-in ceremony took place on Wednesday at the Bayelsa State Executive Council Chamber in Yenagoa, coinciding with the inauguration of four commissioners and 14 permanent secretaries.

According to reports, Akpe will serve out the remaining two years of the current administration. During the ceremony, Governor Douye Diri remembered the late Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away on December 11 and received a full state burial.

“The former occupant of this office, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, was given a full state burial and has been laid to rest. I appreciate the state and stakeholders for their collective support during his passing,” Diri stated.

The governor explained that Akpe’s nomination followed careful consultations and prayers. “After prayerfully seeking the face of God, I forwarded the name of Dr. Peter Akpe to the House of Assembly. Remarkably, even our attire today aligns, which I see as divinely instructive,” he said.

Diri emphasized that Akpe was chosen based on competence, character, and integrity. “I sought someone who is competent, God-fearing, and of impeccable character, and I found that in Dr. Peter Akpe. I thank the Assembly for their swift consideration and clearance. As Deputy Governor, he has my full support and trust,” the governor added.

He further urged Akpe to uphold the oath of office and prioritize the well-being of the state. “I charge you to discharge your duties with honour and empathy, keeping the confidence of the people as your guiding principle,” Diri said.

The ceremony also marked a broader reshuffle of the state’s executive structure, including the induction of four commissioners and 18 permanent secretaries.
