Breaking: ActionAid Nigeria Urges Immediate-Arrest And Prosecution Of Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello

ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has intensified calls for the Federal Government to take decisive action in arresting and prosecuting the former governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello. The group emphasizes that the immunity granted to governors ends after eight years in office, necessitating accountability for their actions during and after their tenure.

In a statement to Vanguard on Wednesday, Andrew Mamedu, the Country Director of AAN, underscored the urgency of the situation, stating that there is no time to waste in pursuing legal accountability for Yahaya Bello. Mamedu emphasized that the Presidency must exert its full authority to ensure the former governor’s immediate arrest and prosecution.

Mamedu articulated, “When a former governor evades legal accountability, it undermines the nation’s commitment to the rule of law and justice. The situation with Yahaya Bello demands a more robust intervention than what is currently being deployed.

“In such serious circumstances, one would expect the Presidency to exert its full authority and take more decisive steps towards the immediate arrest of the former governor, ensuring that he faces charges in a competent court of law.

“Allegations of corruption amounting to over N80 billion against a former governor and his aide are grave matters that cannot be taken lightly, and the handling of their arrest should reflect the seriousness of these charges.

“If Yahaya Bello is confident in his innocence, he should not evade legal proceedings. Instead, he should step forward to defend himself and his integrity. His evasion of law enforcement only deepens public suspicion and further damages his reputation.

“Cooperating with authorities and participating in the judicial process is crucial for addressing the charges against him lawfully. Showing respect for the rule of law and legal institutions is not only in his best interest but also vital for maintaining the integrity of the nation’s justice system.

“The EFCC must enhance coordination with the police, customs, navy, and other security agencies to prevent further evasion, especially under disguise. Collaboration with international anti-corruption agencies to track and apprehend all individuals implicated in corruption charges, including Yahaya Bello, is imperative to ensure justice is served.”
