Tension Arise As CJN Summons Chief Judges Over Conflicting Orders On Kano Emirate-Leadership
The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has taken decisive action amidst the recent wave of conflicting orders from courts under the jurisdiction of Chief Judge Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court and Chief Judge Justice Dije Aboki of Kano State. The conflicting orders, which pertain to the leadership dynamics within the Kano Emirate, have prompted the CJN’s intervention to prevent further confusion and ensure judicial integrity.
The Kano State High Court and the Federal High Court issued contradictory orders regarding the status of the Emirship, with the former ruling in favor of Muhammadu Sanusi, the 16th Emir of Kano, while the latter backed the dethroned 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero.
In response, the CJN has summoned both Chief Judges for an emergency meeting, scheduled to take place on May 30, 2024. This meeting serves as a prelude to a comprehensive investigation by the National Judicial Council (NJC) into the matter.
Soji Oye, the Director of Information at the NJC, conveyed this development in a statement, highlighting the gravity of the situation and the need for swift and thorough deliberations. The meeting aims to provide the CJN with a detailed briefing on the conflicting judgments and to pave the way for subsequent investigations by the NJC.
Furthermore, the NJC has announced plans for an emergency meeting next week, during which the implicated judges are expected to be invited and subjected to rigorous scrutiny as part of the investigative process.
This proactive approach underscores the commitment of the judiciary to uphold the rule of law and maintain the integrity of judicial decisions, particularly in cases of significant public interest such as the leadership dispute within the Kano Emirate. As the investigation unfolds, stakeholders will keenly observe the proceedings, hoping for clarity and resolution to the conflicting orders that have sparked controversy and uncertainty.
