Just In: Afenifere Urges President Tinubu To Revamp-Economic Policies Amid Growing Poverty Among Nigerians
Afenifere, the influential pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, has issued a compelling call for President Bola Tinubu to undertake a comprehensive overhaul of his administration’s economic strategies. The group asserts that the current policies have led to a significant deterioration in the living standards of Nigerians. Justice Faloye, the Publicity Secretary of Afenifere, made this plea public in a statement released yesterday.
Expressing profound concerns about the worsening economic conditions under the current administration, Afenifere emphasized the urgent need for President Tinubu to reassess and implement reforms aimed at alleviating the suffering of millions of Nigerians. Faloye stressed the importance of prioritizing the welfare of the people and adopting more inclusive and effective economic measures.
This call for policy review comes against the backdrop of mounting challenges such as inflation, unemployment, and economic hardship, which have fueled public discontent and demands for prompt governmental intervention. It also reflects heightened expectations for President Tinubu’s administration to deliver on its promises of economic revitalization and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
In assessing Tinubu’s first year in office, Afenifere pointed out significant turbulence in the economy, attributing it to a continuation and exacerbation of the economic legacy inherited from the previous administration. The organization criticized the adoption of what it termed as flawed neo-liberal theories, particularly regarding subsidy removals and tax increases, which it believes have further strained the economy and exacerbated hardships for ordinary citizens.
Afenifere highlighted various economic policies and practices that it deemed counterproductive, including the floating of the Naira without adequate measures to regulate market speculation and capital flight. The organization emphasized the need for a governance approach that prioritizes the stimulation of the economy and the enhancement of citizens’ well-being, rather than perpetuating a cycle of fiscal mismanagement and undue burden on the populace.
The statement concluded with a stark warning about the consequences of continuing down the current path, urging for a halt to what it termed as an economic dispensation where the privileged few benefit at the expense of the masses. Afenifere emphasized the need for decisive action to prevent further deterioration of Nigeria’s socio-political fabric.
As Afenifere’s call reverberates across the nation, it is expected to fuel discussions and debates on the direction of economic policy and governance in Nigeria. The response to these concerns will likely shape public perceptions and influence the course of action taken by the government in addressing the pressing economic challenges facing the country.
