The Election Commission of Pakistan has issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, adding to the numerous legal challenges he currently faces.

The warrant was issued in Islamabad, accusing Khan of being in contempt of the Election Commission’s proceedings and failing to appear before the commission despite earlier notices and bailable warrants. Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Party, has been the subject of over 150 cases, including charges of “terrorism,” since his removal as Prime Minister through a no-confidence vote in parliament in April the previous year.

Khan was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court in another case on the same day the latest warrant was issued. His party posted an image of the warrant on social media, stating that Khan was requested to appear before the Election Commission on July 25, and he has agreed to do so.

The arrest warrant accuses Khan of using “intemperate language and contemptuous remarks” against the Election Commission, and it directs the capital’s inspector general of police to arrest him and present him before the election body on Tuesday.

Addressing his supporters on YouTube after the warrant was issued, Khan expressed his readiness to go to jail. As the main opposition leader, he relies heavily on social media to communicate with his followers since local television channels have been banned from broadcasting his speeches and naming him.

Last week, another criminal case was announced against Khan, accusing him of exposing official secrets related to diplomatic correspondence between Washington and Islamabad. Khan considers all the cases against him to be “bogus” and “fake” and accuses the Interior Minister of wanting to imprison him, acting as “judge, jury, and executioner.”

Previously, Khan was arrested in May on corruption charges, which led to violent unrest across the country. He was released on bail a few days later. Khan has attributed his ouster to the powerful army, which he views as the de facto ruler in Pakistan, a South Asian nation with a population of over 200 million people.
