According to a statement released on Monday, August 28, by the president’s special adviser on media and publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu aims to reduce the cost of governance by curtailing the number of officials involved in foreign trips.

The directive requires the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to halt the processing of visas for government officials traveling to the UNGA in New York unless they have direct participation in the official schedule of UNGA activities. The directive also advises the U.S. Mission in Nigeria to adhere to official visa processing procedures, and Nigeria’s Permanent Mission in New York to only accredit government officials listed on the protocol lists provided by the approving authority.

All federal ministries, departments, and agencies are mandated to ensure that officials approved for inclusion in the UNGA delegation limit the number of accompanying aides and staff. Any excesses or irregularities in this regard will be addressed during the final verification process.

The statement emphasizes that President Tinubu’s intention is for government officials and expenditures to align with the prudent practices and sacrifices being made by the Nigerian people nationwide.
