[BREAKING] ECOWAS Delegation: How Abdulsalami, Sultan Were Humiliated By Niger Junta

A Nigerian government source informed the newspaper that the three-member team, which was sent to negotiate with the junta leaders, was not allowed entry into the country.

The delegation had informed Niamey of their mission before departing from Abuja, and Niamey had initially shown readiness to receive them. However, it turned out that this was a ploy to humiliate the regional bloc.

The ECOWAS delegation, consisting of Abdulsalami Abubakar, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray, and the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar III, was appointed to engage all stakeholders and seek a peaceful resolution of the situation in Niger for the sake of African peace and development.

Upon their arrival at Niamey airport, the delegation was met by a five-member team led by General Moussa Barmou, the Head of General Staff. However, they were informed that they would not be allowed into the city due to security concerns. The delegation was then confined to a room within the airport.

Contrary to public perception, a picture circulating online of the ECOWAS delegation sitting at a table with Niger soldiers was taken while they were being held in the airport by the soldiers who received them.

After five hours of unsuccessful pleas to enter the city and meet with the junta leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the delegation left Niger and returned to Nigeria. The junta instructed them to return to Nigeria while they reviewed their request.

This is the third delegation that ECOWAS has sent to Niger. The first two missions, sent before and after the coup was officially announced, failed to make progress in negotiations with the junta leaders.

ECOWAS had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Nigerien coup leaders to restore democracy. The deadline passed without a formal announcement of the next steps by the regional bloc. ECOWAS defense chiefs met and discussed a plan of action, and President Bola Tinubu notified the National Assembly of the possibility of troop deployment, although the Senate advised exploring a political solution to the crisis.
