BREAKING: Ex-Ondo Deputy Gov Agboola Ajayi Quits PDP For APC

According to Ireporter Online, former Deputy Governor of Ondo State and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the last election, Agboola Ajayi, has formally returned to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ajayi, who previously served as deputy governor under the late Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, rejoined the ruling party on Tuesday at Apoi Ward 2, Kiribo, in Ese Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State.

Speaking during the event, Ajayi said his return to the APC was motivated by his desire to contribute meaningfully to the party’s growth and to support the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election. He noted that his decision was also influenced by the need to back the EASE Agenda of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as well as President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Ajayi explained that rejoining the APC reaffirmed his full membership of the party and would enable him to actively participate in its internal processes and development. Drawing from global political experiences, he emphasized that personal political differences should not override national interest, citing examples of reconciliation in other democracies.

He stated that political disagreements, campaigns and propaganda are common features of democratic contests but stressed that unity and collective interest remain paramount to national progress. Ajayi referenced political reconciliation in Kenya, where former rivals eventually came together for the sake of national stability, describing his return to the APC as a similar gesture driven by the larger Nigeria project.

The former deputy governor acknowledged that rivalry characterized the last election cycle but said reconciliation was necessary for development. He disclosed that he had since engaged in discussions with Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, noting that despite political tensions during campaigns, national interest must always take precedence.

Ajayi also commended President Tinubu for what he described as bold and far-reaching economic reforms, stating that the policies had laid a strong foundation for Nigeria’s future. According to him, the reforms have positioned the country for economic stability and would be difficult for any future administration to reverse.

On security and governance, Ajayi noted that while no nation is entirely free of crime, Nigeria has witnessed noticeable improvements compared to previous years. He urged residents of Ondo State to support Governor Aiyedatiwa, saying such backing would enable the administration to deliver more dividends of democracy to the people.

Reacting to Ajayi’s return, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the development as a major boost for the APC in Ondo State. Speaking through his Special Adviser on Legislative and Party Affairs, Babatunde Kolawole, the governor said Ajayi’s political experience, grassroots appeal and influence would further strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

The Ondo State APC Chairman, Ade Adetimehin, also welcomed Ajayi back into the party, describing him as a seasoned grassroots politician with deep knowledge of the state. He expressed confidence that Ajayi’s return would enhance unity within the party and improve its prospects in the 2027 elections.
