BREAKING: Foreign Airlines May Suspend Flights To Nigeria (DETAILS)

The aviation unions have just finalized plans to completely close down Murtala Muhammed Airport and others to flight operations and other activities beginning Monday, April 17th, 2023.

The development followed a notice earlier issued by unions representing aviation workers nationwide to go on strike for two days between Monday and Tuesday to press home their demands, which included the implementation of the new salary structure.

The unions are also urging the government to persuade the minister of aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika, to reverse his decision to demolish the aviation agencies’ headquarters in Lagos.

In a circular issued over the weekend, the unions threatened a full-fledged strike if their demands were not met after the two-day warning strike expired on Tuesday.

It was gathered, however, that all efforts by the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Captain Musa Nuhu, to persuade the unions at a meeting he held with them in Abuja that lasted until the late hours of Sunday failed to yield any positive results, as the unions said there was no going back to shut down the Lagos airport.

According to a union member who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune, the planned airport shutdown will be the first of its kind, as no one will be allowed access to the airport.

To demonstrate their readiness, the unions said after a joint meeting at the Lagos airport that lasted until after 10 p.m. on Sunday that many of the unions have resolved to sleep at the airport to effect the shutdown from Monday midnight.

According to the unions, the government should prepare for a scenario similar to what occurred when the National Association of Nigerian Students paralyzed airport operations in protest of the eight-month closure of tertiary institutions.

The Federal government’s decision to invite the unions to the crucial meeting was prompted by foreign airlines’ threat to suspend flights into the country until the stalemate is resolved.

During the warning strikes, all of the agencies’ offices will be locked down, and allied businesses will be impacted.

Present at the failed meeting with the NCAA DG include: all heads of the Aviation agencies, the Permanent Secretary at the ministry of aviation,  the Director of Trade Ministry of Labour, the Director Human Resources at the Ministry of aviation, the union Presidents among others
