Lights Out” Debuts In Cameroon Ahead Of Its ABFF Premiere

According to Ireporter Online, the American Black Film Festival (ABFF)-selected film Lights Out has premiered in Douala, Cameroon, ahead of its anticipated international screening.

The film, which features Wale Ojo, Elizabeth Ngongang, Shaffy Bello, and Syndy Emade, was officially unveiled on April 18 at Majestic Bessengue in Douala. Directed by Enah Johnscott and produced by Carista Asonganyi alongside Buh Melvin (Baba Proxy), the project delves into the realities of dementia, highlighting its emotional toll on families while also drawing attention to institutional shortcomings in care systems.

During a post-screening discussion, Cameroonian actress and model Syndy Emade used the opportunity to advocate for stronger representation and intentional participation of women in the film industry, noting the growing influence of female creatives in Cameroon’s entertainment space.

Actress Elizabeth Ngongang also reflected on the emotional depth required for her role, particularly in portraying a character affected by dementia. Responding to audience engagement, director Enah Johnscott explained that the storyline was inspired by the progressive nature of dementia, while co-producer Buh Melvin stressed that the film seeks to spark awareness and encourage public conversations around caregiving and support structures, which remain limited in Cameroon.

Earlier on the day of the premiere, the production team held a press briefing at the same venue, moderated by Sahndra Fon Dufe, founder of Black Film Wire and African Pictures International (API), who also leads the project’s strategic communications and distribution efforts. She confirmed that Lights Out will be released through a multi-platform distribution strategy aimed at reaching audiences across cinemas and digital platforms in various regions.
