BREAKING: Former Nigerian Minister Alison-Madueke Charged With Bribery By UK Police (DETAILS)
British authorities announced on Tuesday that they have formally charged former Nigerian oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke with bribery offenses.
It is alleged that she accepted bribes in exchange for awarding lucrative oil and gas contracts worth millions of pounds.
Alison-Madueke, aged 63, held a significant role during the presidency of former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, serving as the petroleum minister from 2010 to 2015.
She also held the position of president of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Andy Kelly, the Head of the National Crime Agency’s (NCA) International Corruption Unit, stated, “We suspect Diezani Alison-Madueke abused her power in Nigeria and accepted financial rewards for awarding multi-million-pound contracts. These charges mark a significant point in a comprehensive and intricate international investigation.”
The NCA outlined that the charges against her involve benefiting from various forms of compensation, including cash amounting to at least £100,000, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights, lavish family holidays, and the use of multiple luxury properties in London.
The charges also detail rewards such as furniture, property renovations, staffing for her properties, private school fees, and gifts from high-end designer stores, such as Cartier jewelry and Louis Vuitton items.
Despite facing corruption allegations since leaving office, Alison-Madueke has consistently denied the charges.
The former minister is currently residing in St John’s Wood, an affluent neighborhood in west London. Her court appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court is scheduled for October 2.
