BREAKING: New Twist As Niger’s Military Administration Denies Expelling German, US, Or Nigerian Envoys

Niger’s military administration clarified that it had ordered the expulsion of only the French ambassador from the country, refuting reports that the German, US, and Nigerian envoys were also being expelled.

The administration’s statement, released late Friday, specifically indicated that “only the French ambassador in Niger is declared persona non grata.”

The move came after Niger’s military administration gave the French Ambassador, Sylvain Itte, 48 hours to leave the country, citing his failure to respond to an invitation from Niger’s foreign minister.

The ministry emphasized that the Vienna Convention of 1961 was not required for the expulsion and that it had the authority to execute this within 24 hours.

The French Foreign Ministry rejected the action, asserting that the military administration lacked the authority to expel the ambassador. French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna expressed solidarity with Nigerien Ambassador Aichatou Boulama Kane in Paris, who had resisted leaving her post following the military intervention that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.

The situation in Niger remains uncertain since the military intervention led by Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani removed President Mohamed Bazoum from power.
