Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament taking place in Kigali, Rwanda.
In their match against Egypt at the BK Arena on Sunday, D’Tigress showcased their determination to secure a remarkable fourth consecutive continental title by defeating Egypt 83-65 and securing an early spot in the last eight.
D’Tigress dominated the first two quarters, leading 18-10 and 24-13. However, they faced tougher competition in the third quarter as Egypt fought back and took the quarter with a score of 19-14, narrowing the gap.
The fourth quarter was fiercely contested as the North Africans attempted to make a comeback. Nevertheless, D’Tigress displayed resilience and composure, ultimately winning the final quarter 27-23 and clinching the game 83-65.
Amy Okonkwo was the top scorer with an impressive 29 points and 13 rebounds, leading D’Tigress to victory and securing their place in the quarterfinals. Murjanatu Musa also made a significant impact with 18 points, while Nicole Enabosi contributed 10 points to the team’s success.
It marks the third consecutive win for Nigeria against Egypt, having previously beaten them in 2015 and 2017.
While Nigeria has already secured a place in the quarterfinals, Egypt and DR Congo will have to play a qualifying round to determine whether they can join Nigeria in the next stage of the tournament or head home.
