BREAKING: Tension In Niger As Military Rulers Order French, German, Nigerian And US Ambassadors Out (DETAILS)

Tensions have surged in Niger as its military rulers issued a 48-hour ultimatum for the French, German, Nigerian, and US ambassadors to leave the country.

This move follows growing concerns over the threat of military intervention by the West African bloc ECOWAS to reverse the recent coup. However, France swiftly rejected the ultimatum, reiterating its non-recognition of the military’s authority.

The situation marks a further deterioration of relations between the new leadership in Niamey and various Western powers, including ECOWAS.

The coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, with France endorsing ECOWAS’ calls for his reinstatement.

Niger’s foreign ministry communicated the expulsion orders to the envoys, citing their governments’ actions contrary to Niger’s interests and their refusal to attend a scheduled meeting.

The French foreign ministry rejected the request, emphasizing that the military lacks authority in making such decisions.

France has stationed 1,500 soldiers in Niger to aid in the fight against jihadist forces, while the US has around a thousand military personnel in the country. ECOWAS has urged the coup leaders to reconsider their stance and seek a return to civilian rule, with the potential use of force still an option.

The coup has increased tensions in the Sahel region, which has witnessed multiple military takeovers since 2020, and where jihadist groups hold significant territory. ECOWAS is concurrently engaged in negotiations with military administrations in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea, which have all experienced coups, to facilitate transitions to democracy.

The situation remains fluid, with Niger’s new rulers offering mixed messages regarding negotiations and consequences for the ousted president. As ECOWAS prepares a standby mission for possible intervention, the region faces delicate political and security challenges.
