He emphasized that both the decision to explore such intervention and the ultimatum presented to the leaders of Niger’s military coup to reinstate the deposed president were made by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas) regional bloc, and not a directive solely from Nigeria.

Bola Tinubu, who also holds the position of the current Ecowas chairman, has faced scrutiny for allegedly advocating for military intervention in Niger. A spokesperson for the Nigerian government clarified that the president wanted to unequivocally state that the mandate and ultimatum issued by Ecowas represent the collective position of the regional bloc.

The spokesperson’s statement also outlined that the imposition of financial sanctions on Niger was executed by Ecowas. Ecowas has expressed a preference for resolving the situation through diplomatic and political means, aiming to restore the elected President of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum. The regional body indicated that military intervention would be considered a “last option” if the junta remains defiant.

With the Ecowas deadline having expired on Sunday, the heads of state from Ecowas member countries are set to convene on Thursday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital. The meeting will center on discussions regarding the next steps to be taken concerning the situation in Niger.
