Breaking: Tinubu’s Govt Declares Sudden Public Holiday
The Federal Government of Nigeria, under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, has officially declared Thursday, March 19, and Friday, March 20, 2026, as public holidays in celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. According to Ireporter Online, the announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Tuesday by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo extended warm greetings to the Muslim faithful on the successful completion of Ramadan, urging them to uphold the values of love, generosity, peace, tolerance, and sacrifice that define the holy month. The minister further encouraged all Nigerians to use the festive period to pray for the nation’s continued peace, unity, and prosperity, while celebrating responsibly and showing kindness to those in need. He reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to fostering national unity and peaceful coexistence among all citizens.
Meanwhile, the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has announced the commencement of the search for the Shawwal crescent, signaling the end of Ramadan 1447AH and the start of Eid celebrations. According to the Sultanate Council in Sokoto, Wednesday, March 18, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Ramadan, has been designated for a nationwide moon sighting, with Muslims encouraged to report any credible sightings promptly.
