Bride Discusses Wedding Cancellation Due To Church Attendance Disagreement
Nigerian bride-to-be Patience Addra has come forward to address the cancellation of her wedding just one day before the scheduled ceremony, eliciting a range of online reactions from sympathy to criticism.
A digital copy of the wedding invitation, obtained by IREPORTER Online on Monday, revealed that the wedding was set for Saturday, April 5, in Anguldi, Zawan Jos, but was suddenly called off on Friday.
“Online family (in-laws), well done,” Patience posted on Saturday, the intended wedding day. “If you follow the social media saga, you might as well die before your time.”
Friends and followers responded to her posts with many suggesting she take a break from social media.
According to various online sources, the couple had been in a relationship for three years. Initial reports suggested that the cancellation stemmed from the groom’s affiliation with the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN).
However, a writer based in Jos, Paul Kums, provided the bride’s perspective, stating that the groom’s mother canceled the wedding after Patience, a devout Catholic, expressed her intent to continue attending her church post-marriage.
Kums explained that tensions began during their final counseling session with the reverend, where the couple was asked about their future church attendance plans. While the bride indicated she would remain a Catholic, the groom, a dedicated COCIN member, insisted they attend his church together.
“The groom revealed that his mother was insistent that they attend his church. He conveyed that his mother made it clear that if the bride refused to accompany him to his church, the wedding would not take place. Frustrated, the bride responded, ‘If your mother is going to make all the decisions for you, then perhaps we should call off the wedding,’” he said.
The groom, surprised by her reaction, returned home and shared the discussion with his mother, who became furious and declared, “If that’s how she feels, then the wedding is off!”
As the wedding day drew closer, the bride soon realized that her future mother-in-law was serious about her decision. In a bid to salvage the situation, she began pleading with the groom, promising to attend his church and find a compromise. However, the mother-in-law’s stance was unwavering.
Patience grew increasingly desperate, particularly regarding her own mother’s fragile health, fearing that the stress of a canceled wedding could cause her mother distress. Despite her pleas for the groom to reconsider, it appeared that the mother’s influence had far too great an impact.
Responses to the wedding cancellation flooded social media, with mixed sentiments. Christfurtune Timmy Kayathbachet commented, “Who told you that women have denominations? This is a sad reality.”
Mercy Faruk Taldang encouraged her, stating, “You’ll be fine, dear. God will see you through.”
Conversely, JockNom John Sani advised, “For your own sanity, it would be best to take a break from this space. Making this post seems unnecessary, and it would be wise for you to focus on healing rather than engaging with critics. It might be beneficial to clear the air later to protect your reputation.”
