Former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, has described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as a mafia-like organization rather than a genuine political party.

In an interview with Vanguard, Bucknor-Akerele criticized the wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC, stating that such movements highlight a growing disconnect between politicians and the electorate.

She remarked that many politicians pursue personal agendas and have ceased to engage with or represent the interests of the people who voted them into office.

Commenting on the defections, she recalled a statement by former APC Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, who once said that joining the APC absolves politicians of their past misdeeds. “It’s clear they have sins they want forgiven,” she said. “That’s why they’re flocking to the APC. Honestly, I don’t see the APC as a real political party—it behaves more like a mafia organization.”

She further lamented the gap between the ruling class and everyday Nigerians. “If you go to the streets, you’ll see how out of touch the politicians are with the people. Their priorities are misaligned with those of the citizens,” she added, expressing hope that the 2027 elections would bring a shift in the political landscape.

Addressing the coalition being formed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against President Bola Tinubu, Bucknor-Akerele distanced herself from such efforts. “I’m not supporting any coalition at the moment. It’s too early. We need to assess the situation thoroughly before forming any new political alliances,” she said.

She maintained her belief in the viability of the PDP, asserting that the party remains the only one with a strong grassroots presence across all wards in Nigeria.
