Two additional people suffered injuries and were swiftly transported to Kubwa General Hospital, where the deceased, identified as Harisu and Najibu Ibrahim, were later taken for autopsy. Kuchibiyu is an agricultural community located on the outskirts of Kubwa.
According to the FCT Police Command, the explosion occurred around 11:00 AM at Tsangayar Sani Uthman school. Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh stated that emergency responders, including the Command’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit, were promptly dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.
During the investigation, it was revealed that three individuals from Katsina had visited the school’s proprietor, Mallam Adamu Ashimu, and are believed to have brought the explosive device. Tragically, two of these men died while handling an improvised explosive device (IED) on the school’s veranda. The third man and a female trader sustained serious injuries and are currently under police supervision at the hospital.
The FCT Bomb Squad confirmed the use of an IED, with remnants of the device recovered from the scene. Mallam Ashimu has been taken into custody for further questioning.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Olatunji Disu, urged the public to remain alert and report suspicious activities or objects resembling explosives to the authorities through designated emergency numbers.
In a statement directed at residents, the police advised vigilance and awareness of their surroundings, recommending that they avoid touching any suspicious items and keep emergency contact numbers at hand.
Eyewitness Account
Thirteen-year-old Fauziyya Iliya, an injured witness, recounted the event from her hospital bed. She said that Harisu approached her, offering an object he claimed to have found nearby. When he attempted to pick it up, the device exploded, injuring her legs and hand. In the chaos, Fauziyya described how she crawled away from the scene.
Fauzziya’s mother, Salamatu Lawal, recounted hearing the explosion from their home, later finding her daughter and another injured individual seeking help.
Malam Yusuf Alkali, secretary to the Chief of Kuchibiyu, shared that the school, established four years ago, has been providing education to almajirai students. The chairman of the Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya, confirmed the incident and stated that he witnessed one of the deceased during his visit to the scene.
Background on Bombings in Abuja
There have been numerous bomb attacks in Abuja and nearby areas since 2010, including a vehicle bombing during Nigeria’s 50th Independence Day celebrations, suicide bombings at police headquarters and the United Nations building, and a deadly attack on St. Theresa’s Church in Madalla. The violence has often been linked to terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND).
