Chaos In The Ring? Nigeria Boxing Federation Cautions Portable And Speed Darlington To Prepare Safely For April 18 Bout
Azania Omo-Agege, the Interim President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, has called on celebrity boxers Portable and Speed Darlington to prioritize their safety as they prepare for their upcoming match on April 18……..READ MORE
Omo-Agege praised Portable for using his platform to raise awareness of boxing but stressed that the sport demands more preparation and safety than street fighting.
“I commend Portable for promoting boxing, but both fighters must approach this match with the right mindset and proper preparation to ensure their safety,” said Omo-Agege.
The match, titled “Chaos in the Ring: Battle for Glory,” will take place at the Balmoral Convention Center on Victoria Island, Lagos. Omo-Agege expressed concern over the short preparation time for the fighters, suggesting that two weeks might not be enough for them to get in peak physical condition, particularly considering their lifestyles as entertainers.
He urged promoters to ensure the fighters engage in proper training and emphasized the importance of using protective gear, such as headgear and mouthguards. Omo-Agege also stressed the need for medical professionals to be on hand during the event. This caution follows the tragic death of Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju Segun “Success,” who passed away due to a cardiac arrest during a fight in Ghana.
“I urge the promoters to ensure that both fighters wear proper headgear this time. In their previous match, they fought without sufficient protection, which is unacceptable,” Omo-Agege added.
The rivalry between Portable and Speed Darlington intensified after Speed Darlington’s offer of ₦500,000 for Portable to perform at his event, which was perceived as an insult by Portable. Meanwhile, Portable has been actively training for the match, preparing in a makeshift outdoor ring. He previously triumphed over Nollywood actor Charles Okocha in a celebrity boxing match in December, despite Okocha’s calls for a rematch.
