According to reports, Girma’s transfer fee surpasses the former record of £685,000 set by Bay FC for Racheal Kundananji in February 2024. The 24-year-old player, who was unveiled at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, becomes the first signing of the January transfer window for Chelsea Women’s head coach Sonia Bompastor.

Girma’s acquisition comes on the heels of an injury to defender Kadeisha Buchanan, which could sideline her for the remainder of the season. Chelsea’s head of women’s football, Paul Green, expressed his excitement at bringing Girma to the club, describing her as a “world-class defender”.

Girma, who was instrumental in the US Women’s Olympic campaign in Paris last year, playing every minute, also won US Soccer’s female player of the year award in 2023. Upon her arrival at Chelsea, Girma expressed her enthusiasm at being part of the club, citing the team’s culture and winning mentality as key factors in her decision.

“I’m so happy and really excited to be here. It doesn’t feel real,” Girma said in an interview with Chelsea’s website. “There are a lot of things about Chelsea that made me want to come here: the culture, the winning mentality, staff, and players. It’s a top environment to learn and grow in.”
