Choice of APC National Chairman: Will Buhari Get It Right?

As preparations for the APC National Convention hot up, the consistency and morality of President Mohamandu Buhari face acid text.

The successive National Chairmen, namely Chief Bisi Akande, Chief John Oyegun and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, all from the ACN legacy and Southern Nigeria.

One of the overriding. Considerations in choosing Chief Oyegun above Chief Tom Ikimi in 2014 was that Chief Oyegun has never been in PDP.

This consideration was key because the founding fathers of the party resolved that the Chairman must not be a habitual or notorious decampee who would defect to another party at the slightest provocation.

He must also possess proven progressive democratic credentials.

Today, none of the three has jilted the party even when some of them didn’t like the way they were removed from office.

Because APC prides itself on anti-corruption principles from inception, it ruled out all those known to be facing corruption charges.

Asiwaju Bola Tinubu was the one who picked each of the first two National Chairmen Chiefs Akande and Oyegun, and he made input in the choice of the third, Comrade Oshiomhole.

Current Governor of Yobe State is the first National Chairman to be chosen by President Buhari. He is really the first from the North.

Even as temporary Chairman, his performance has been nothing but a discredit to the sense of judgement of Mr President.

The March 26 convention offers an opportunity for President Buhari to prove to the world that the class of Governor Buni is not his best for me party. And that the North can provide more credible and effective leadership for the party.

Will he glorify a decampee , a mole in the progressive fold or a corrupt former Governor with the chairmanship of his party, and thus cover up the charges against him with the exalted office?
Let’s watch and pray for President Buhari.
