Coalition Of Opposition Parties Gears Up To Confront Tinubu’s 2027 Reelection Bid
As the 2027 presidential elections approach, opposition parties and groups are uniting to form a formidable coalition aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). This coalition, referred to as the “Mother of Opposition Alliance,”...READ MORE..
is designed to counter the APC’s dominance and its hold on power.
Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, representing Ideato Federal Constituency in Imo State, has spearheaded efforts to create the alliance, asserting that it will proceed regardless of the involvement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ugochinyere criticized the PDP leadership for its inability to serve as an effective opposition, particularly amid Nigeria’s growing challenges. He expressed frustration over the recent endorsement of the Ambassador Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC) by PDP governors, accusing them of weakening the party.
Segun Showunmi, former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 presidential campaign, launched the National Opposition Movement Coalition (NOMC), also known as ‘The Alternative.’ This initiative seeks to restore electoral integrity, provide ideological direction, and rebuild voter confidence by offering a platform for political engagement and reform.
The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP), represented by Chief Peter Ameh, has pledged full support for the alliance. Ameh emphasized the necessity of uniting like-minded groups to challenge the APC and Tinubu in 2027. He criticized the APC’s governance, citing economic hardship, insecurity, and corruption, and expressed confidence that the alliance could bring about a new era of good governance.
Chief Chekwas Okorie, founder of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), noted that political realignments are expected by mid-2025. While APGA is focused on internal restructuring, Okorie emphasized the importance of collaboration among like-minded political entities, although he clarified that APGA is not interested in mergers but rather in coalitions aimed at promoting equity, justice, and national unity.
The National Consultative Front (NCFront) has also taken a leadership role, pushing for a broad-based political movement to bring together leaders from various political parties, including disaffected members of the APC, PDP, Labour Party, and NNPP. The initiative, which began on February 6, 2024, aims to form a new mega opposition platform to challenge the APC in the upcoming elections. NCFront spokesperson Hamisu Santuraki highlighted that the movement is focused on creating a new Nigeria that works for all its citizens.
