Controversy Erupts At MOUAU As ASUU Calls For Inaugural Lecture Cancellation

In their petition, ASUU raised concerns over irregularities in the professorship of the scheduled inaugural lecturer, Professor Raphael Echebiri. The union claimed that Echebiri’s promotion, initially revoked, was reinstated by the current administration despite unresolved issues regarding due process. They cited an August 2024 letter to the Vice Chancellor highlighting a report from the MOUAU Visitation Panel that raised doubts about the legality of Echebiri’s promotion.

ASUU has called for the lecture to be canceled, stressing that it risks tarnishing the university’s reputation and leading it back to an era of impunity.

However, MOUAU’s Public Relations Head, Ubadire Agua, dismissed the allegations, defending the Vice Chancellor and affirming that the university’s Senate, which includes ASUU members, had approved Echebiri’s appointment. Agua emphasized the importance of maintaining the peaceful and progressive atmosphere at the university, insisting that the lecture will proceed as scheduled.

The dispute highlights growing concerns over transparency and governance within Nigerian academic institutions.
