Court Slams N500m Bail On Yahaya Bello, Bars Him From Foreign Travel
The Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has granted former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, a N500 million bail in connection…Court Slams N500m Bail On Yahaya Bello, Bars Him From Foreign Travel
with his trial for an alleged N10.4 billion fraud.
In addition to the bail, the court ordered Bello to surrender his passport, with a condition that he may not travel abroad without prior permission from the court.
Bello, along with his co-defendants, Shuaibu Oricha and Abdulsalam Hudu, faces 16 charges including conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and possession of illegally obtained property. The trio was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on November 27, and all have pleaded not guilty.
Earlier, Justice MaryAnne Anenih had rejected Bello’s initial bail request on December 10, deeming it premature, as it had been filed before he was arrested and brought before the court. His co-defendants were, however, granted bail at N300 million each.
On Thursday, Bello’s legal team, led by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), J.B. Daudu, submitted a new bail application. The court granted the application, setting bail conditions that require Bello to provide three sureties, each responsible for the same N500 million bail sum.
The sureties must be prominent, land-owning residents of areas such as Maitama, Guzape, Apo, Wuse 2, Garki, Utako, or Asokoro in Abuja. They are required to submit the title documents of their properties along with their personal details to the court.
Justice Anenih also ruled that Bello must remain at the Kuje correctional facility until all bail conditions are fully met. The case is set for trial on January 29 and 30, 2025.
