Court to Hear Natasha’s Suit Against Senate on March 25
A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Obiora Egwatu, has scheduled March 25 for the hearing of a lawsuit filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, against the Nigerian Senate……….READ MORE
In her suit, Natasha seeks an order restraining the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges from investigating her. Following an ex parte motion filed by her legal team, the court issued an interlocutory order preventing the Senate from taking disciplinary actions against her.
Despite the court order, the Senate proceeded to suspend Natasha for six months after reviewing the report of its Disciplinary and Ethics Committee.
During the latest court proceedings, lawyers representing the defendants claimed they had not received court documents related to the case. However, Natasha’s counsel, Michael Numa (SAN), insisted that all parties had been served, and affidavits of service were presented before the court. After reviewing the affidavits, Justice Egwatu confirmed the service of documents to all respondents.
Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), representing the Senate President, requested an adjournment to harmonize all legal processes, a request supported by other defense counsels. The judge granted the adjournment and ordered that all necessary legal documents be served before the next hearing on March 25.
Speaking on the development, Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, Victor Nwaebonyi, emphasized the importance of proper legal service and noted that while the court’s involvement in Senate affairs is unusual, the Senate remains a law-abiding institution.
