The tragic error followed a bandit raid in the area, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 people, with many more injured and lacking access to medical care. The vigilantes, who had been actively protecting the community from banditry, were caught in the crossfire of the strike.

Residents have expressed deep grief and outrage over the airstrike, calling for an independent investigation into the incident. Regional analysts believe the strike was part of a broader military operation to dismantle bandit hideouts in the region.

“Sixteen bodies have been recovered so far, but the number of casualties may rise,” said Bakatsine, a regional analyst.

Amnesty International has condemned the attack, urging the government to conduct an impartial investigation. The organization highlighted the lack of accountability, which has led to repeated deadly errors by the Nigerian Air Force.

This incident adds to a troubling pattern of similar mistakes by the NAF, including previous strikes in Borno, Kaduna, and Sokoto states, which have resulted in numerous civilian casualties.
