Counterfeit Crisis Averted: NAFDAC Destroys ₦120bn Worth Of Dangerous Products

In a remarkable display of vigilance, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has successfully destroyed counterfeit goods and substandard products valued at a staggering ₦120 billion within just six months, from July to December 2024.

This major achievement underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to safeguarding public health across Nigeria. In a statement released on December 29, 2024, the agency highlighted its rigorous efforts, including a series of high-profile operations across the country.

In one major raid in Ibadan, Oyo State, NAFDAC destroyed ₦11 billion worth of expired and unregistered drugs on December 11, 2024. Similarly, a November operation in Lagos confiscated fake medicines worth ₦300 million and exposed a massive counterfeit alcohol operation, resulting in the seizure of ₦2 billion in illegal products.

In Nasarawa State, NAFDAC officers uncovered counterfeit rice operations, seizing ₦5 billion worth of repackaged expired rice in a series of raids, including one at Karu Market near the FCT-Nasarawa border. Further actions saw the closure of factories and shops involved in the illegal distribution of fake rice, with another ₦5 billion worth of counterfeit goods confiscated in Karu.

The agency’s operations spanned all six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), showcasing a robust response to the growing threat of counterfeit goods in the Nigerian market. NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s resolve to continue its battle against dangerous counterfeiters, warning that the coming year will see even harsher measures.

In a powerful statement, Adeyeye stressed that counterfeiters will face the full force of the law. She also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, advising them to only purchase NAFDAC-approved products from licensed retailers. With the festive season in full swing, the agency is working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians.

As the agency intensifies its crackdown, it urges Nigerians to report any suspected counterfeit products to their nearest office and to remain wary of products sold at unusually low prices or lacking proper certification.
