INEC Sets Date To Publish 2027 Governorship, Assembly Candidates’ Details

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced Saturday, August 29, 2026, as the date for the public display of personal details of candidates nominated by political parties for the 2027 governorship and State House of Assembly elections.

According to IREPORTER ONLINE, the exercise is part of INEC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections and will involve the publication of information submitted by political parties during the nomination process.

The display will provide members of the public with an opportunity to examine the particulars of the candidates and raise objections where they identify discrepancies or other issues requiring the commission’s attention.

INEC has continued to urge political parties and candidates to adhere strictly to the electoral timetable and comply with relevant provisions of the law as preparations for the elections gather momentum.

Meanwhile, the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on INEC to disclose whether it has established limits for political donations ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a Freedom of Information request dated August 22, 2026, SERAP asked the electoral commission to publish details of any limits on political contributions and make the information accessible to political parties, candidates, donors and members of the public.

The organisation said transparency in political financing was necessary to prevent excessive financial influence from undermining the credibility of the electoral process.

SERAP also urged INEC to disclose the mechanisms, personnel and procedures it has put in place to monitor and enforce campaign contribution and spending limits.

The group wants the commission to explain how it intends to track cash and non-cash donations, digital and social media funding, third-party expenditure and contributions made through intermediaries.

According to the organisation, Nigerians should be informed about how political financing will be monitored before the 2027 elections rather than waiting until after the polls.

SERAP further argued that INEC’s responsibility extends beyond receiving financial reports from political parties, noting that the commission is also expected to examine party finances, conduct necessary investigations and report its findings to the National Assembly.

The organisation expressed concern over what it described as widespread failure by political parties to properly disclose campaign contributions, warning that weak enforcement and unclear sanctions could undermine existing political-finance regulations.

It also raised concerns about excessive campaign spending, undisclosed sources of political funding and possible attempts to circumvent spending limits, calling for stronger monitoring and enforcement ahead of the 2027 elections.
