Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan revealed the news during a briefing with WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus in Dodoma. Laboratory tests at Kabaile Mobile Laboratory confirmed the virus in one patient, though all other suspected cases tested negative.

Marburg virus, highly contagious and causing severe haemorrhagic fever, is transmitted from fruit bats to humans and spreads through bodily fluids. There is no licensed vaccine, but supportive care can improve survival rates.

As of now, 25 suspected cases have been reported in Kagera, all of which have tested negative, and measures are being taken to prevent further spread. WHO and the Africa CDC are supporting Tanzania’s response, with a team of experts on the ground.

This marks the second outbreak of the Marburg virus in Tanzania, following a previous case in 2023, which resulted in nine cases and six deaths.
