Deadly Warning: Catholic Priest Shoots Firework Thrower In Imo

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Joseph Enyinnaya, of St. Columbus Catholic Church, Amaimo, Ikeduru LGA, Imo State, has been detained following the tragic death of a boy, identified only as Joseph, during a New Year’s Eve service.

The incident reportedly occurred when the priest, angered by the reckless use of fireworks in the church compound, fired a warning shot. Unfortunately, the bullet hit the boy, killing him instantly and injuring others. Witness accounts suggest the priest had repeatedly cautioned against the use of fireworks near the church.

According to an anonymous source, the priest’s revolver misfired during the attempt to scare off the boys. “He fired into the air, but the bullet hit the boy as he lowered his hand,” the source explained.

Imo State Police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the priest’s arrest and stated that a detailed investigation is underway. “The incident is being thoroughly investigated, and further updates will be provided,” he said.

Those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The tragic event has sparked discussions on the dangers of fireworks and the responsibilities of community leaders.
