Despite Cracks, PDP’s Remains More Powerful Than Most – Ex-Gov Ikpeazu Declares”
Former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has reaffirmed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) still commands significant influence, despite internal conflicts and doubts about its preparedness for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a South East PDP stakeholders’ meeting, Ikpeazu emphasized the need for reconciliation within the party, asserting that the PDP remains a political heavyweight even amid current challenges.
“Even in what many may perceive as its weakest phase, the spirit of the PDP is still stronger than most parties in the country. This is why we must tread carefully and protect what we’ve painstakingly built over the years. Let us unite, respect party structures, and foster peace,” he said.
Ikpeazu’s comments came as a reconciliation committee led by former Senate President, Senator Bukola Saraki, continues efforts to resolve internal disputes. The committee, formed by current and former PDP governors, is working toward ensuring a unified National Executive Committee (NEC) and a successful National Convention.
Addressing the tensions within the South East chapter, Ikpeazu appealed for support of Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP’s National Secretary, urging members to let him complete his tenure, which ends in December.
“What task have we given Senator Anyanwu as National Secretary that he hasn’t carried out? I appeal to our leaders in the zone to let him finish his term. We must not be distracted as a party, no matter the provocation,” he stated.
Ikpeazu also expressed concern over what he described as growing disregard for the Supreme Court ruling affirming Anyanwu’s legitimacy, warning that such actions could deepen divisions and weaken the PDP’s chances in future elections.
He concluded by calling on stakeholders in the South East to embrace unity and collective action, noting that the party’s success in 2027 depends on cohesion and solidarity.
