ECOWAS Endorses Ghana’s President For African Union Chairmanship
According to Ireporter Online, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formally endorsed Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, as its sole candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union (AU) for the 2027 tenure. The decision was reached during the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Abuja.
In a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS noted that the endorsement aligns with its long-standing commitment to collectively support the candidacies of member states and their nationals in international institutions, including the African Union. The bloc emphasised that such backing ensures that the interests of West Africa remain well represented and protected at the continental level.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed the unanimous support, stating that the ECOWAS Council of Ministers had agreed on presenting Mahama as the region’s single nominee when the AU chairmanship rotates to West Africa in 2027. He added that the declaration is expected to receive formal approval from the Authority of Heads of State and Government on Sunday.
Ablakwa expressed profound gratitude on behalf of Ghana, noting that the endorsement reflects confidence in Mahama’s leadership and Pan-African vision. He assured that Ghana remains committed to upholding the values and aspirations of the African continent.
ECOWAS further highlighted Ghana’s strategic significance within the bloc, stressing that President Mahama’s leadership would enhance the region’s influence and representation on the continental stage.
