ECOWAS expressed disbelief at these threats, as they appear to contradict the military regime’s stated commitment to resolving the crisis in a peaceful manner.

The leaders of the coup, who overthrew Bazoum, announced on Sunday that they had gathered evidence to prosecute him for “high treason and undermining the internal and external security of Niger.”

They cited Bazoum’s alleged interactions with nationals, foreign heads of state, and officials from international organizations as the basis for these charges.

In its statement released on Monday, ECOWAS expressed astonishment at the threats made against Bazoum. The regional bloc viewed these actions as provocative and inconsistent with the reported intentions of the military authorities in Niger to restore constitutional order through peaceful means.

Since the coup, Bazoum, aged 63, and his family have been held at the official presidential residence. The international community has raised concerns about the conditions of his detention, adding to the growing worries surrounding the situation.
