The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has refuted claims that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu are involved in the ongoing investigation of Nigerian businesswoman Aisha Achimugu. However, in a statement issued on March 28, 2025, EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, clarified that Achimugu is being investigated solely for alleged criminal conspiracy and money laundering, with no connection to Atiku or Sanwo-Olu. The commission emphasized that it operates in a non-partisan and non-sectarian manner, urging the public to trust its professionalism and refrain from making unfounded assumptions about its work.
The statement further highlighted that the investigation into Achimugu began in 2022. Despite her attempt to secure a court order preventing the EFCC from arresting, investigating, or detaining her, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled on February 19, 2025, that no court can obstruct the investigative powers of law enforcement agencies. The court also upheld an interim order to forfeit assets suspected to be proceeds of crime, dismissing Achimugu’s case as unmeritorious.
The EFCC reiterated that its investigation of Achimugu is unrelated to any political figure or activity, reinforcing its commitment to impartiality and professionalism in its operations.
