Oshiomhole Reveals He Advised Nwosu To Declare Abiola Winner Of June 12, 1993 Election

Adams Oshiomhole, Senator representing Edo North, revealed that he and others had advised the late Professor Humphrey Nwosu, former Chairman of the defunct National Electoral Commission (NEC), to declare Chief MKO Abiola the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. Oshiomhole emphasized that the worst consequence Nwosu could have faced was imprisonment by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd), but he believed Nwosu lacked the courage to make the declaration. He argued that Nwosu had a responsibility, having overseen the election process, to take the final step of announcing the legitimate winner.

Oshiomhole further stated that Abiola, who was not a political scientist but a businessman, had the fortitude to assert his victory, whereas Nwosu, with his political background, could have acted with even greater resolve. He criticized Nwosu for failing to follow through on his duty and suggested that the situation could have been handled better.
