Ekweremadu’s Wife Makes Denial Concerning Search For Kidney Donor
Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has denied being involved in the search for an organ donor for their sick daughter, Sonia.
Beatrice and her husband were arrested in the United Kingdom last year for allegedly trafficking a young man into the country to harvest his kidney.
On Monday, she denied the allegation at the Old Bailey in London, where she is on trial with her husband, daughter, and one medical doctor, Obinna Obeta.
It is claimed that the young man falsely presented himself as Sonia’s cousin in an unsuccessful attempt to persuade doctors to perform an £80,000 private procedure at the Royal Free Hospital.

Beatrice told the court that her husband handled the family’s finances, and that she only performed domestic duties, such as visiting their children at school in the UK every couple of weeks.
Her husband explained that they discovered their daughter had a kidney problem after she became ill in 2919 and was diagnosed in the UK.
Jurors were told that Sonia returned to London to see a doctor at the Cromwell Hospital and then the Royal Free.
The BBC reports that defence lawyer, Anu Mohindru KC, said, “There are text messages from your husband keeping you informed of what was happening. Is that something he would do?”
The defendant replied: “Yes. He tells me what he thinks I need to know.”
The lawyer then asked if Ekweremadu had relayed his conversations with his medically trained brother, Diwe.
Beatrice told jurors that she considered Diwe Ekweremadu to be the family doctor but did not inquire about it.
Obeta, Diwe’s former classmate, allegedly offered to assist the family.
Mrs Ekweremadu denied being involved in the selection of candidates when Mohindru asked her.
The Ekweremadus, who live in Willesden Green, North-West London, and Obeta, who lives in Southwark, South London, both deny the charges leveled against them, and the trial continues.
