since 2019.
Born on May 23, 1908, in Osaka, Japan, Itooka outlived major global events, including world wars, pandemics, and technological advancements. She was recognized as the world’s oldest living person following the death of Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera at age 117 in August 2024.
Ashiya’s mayor, Ryosuke Takashima, paid tribute to Itooka, stating she gave the community “courage and hope” through her long life. The mayor also shared that she had a simple pleasure in her later years, enjoying bananas and Calpis, a popular Japanese drink.
Itooka’s passing highlights Japan’s ongoing demographic challenges, as the country faces rising medical and welfare costs due to its aging population. Despite this, Japanese women continue to enjoy some of the longest life expectancies globally.
