Enugu State Sets Ambitious Goal: Boosting Electricity Supply to 700MW Through Private Sector Partnerships

Enugu State Plans to Supercharge Electricity Supply with Private Investment
The Enugu State Government has unveiled a bold plan to dramatically increase its electricity capacity from the current 70 Megawatts (MW) to an impressive 700 Megawatts. This ambitious goal will be achieved through active collaboration with the private sector, marking a significant step towards economic transformation in the state.
This initiative is part of a broader strategy to expand Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to a projected $30 billion. Achieving this target relies heavily on ensuring a stable and sufficient power supply, which is essential for driving business development, job creation, and overall economic growth.
The state government has shown a strong commitment to involving key industry players in developing its electricity regulatory framework. This collaboration is seen as crucial for ensuring the sustainability and growth of the electricity market in Enugu.
At a recent stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission in the state capital, government officials highlighted the importance of expert input in finalizing the draft regulations that will govern the state’s electricity sector.
Governor Peter Mbah, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, emphasized the critical role of improved electricity services in achieving the state’s development objectives. These objectives include the restoration of pipe-borne water, enhanced security, better education and healthcare services, and improved road infrastructure.
He noted that without a substantial upgrade in power supply, the state’s plans for economic growth and development would be severely hindered. The government’s focus on enhancing electricity services underscores its commitment to creating a conducive environment for businesses and improving the quality of life for its citizens.
By boosting electricity supply to 700MW, Enugu State aims to lay a solid foundation for sustained economic growth and development, positioning itself as a key player in Nigeria’s power sector.
