Epstein Survivors Sue US Govt & Google Over Leaked Identities
Survivors of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have filed a lawsuit against the United States government and Google, alleging that their identities were exposed in sensitive documents released by authorities. The legal action, initiated on Thursday, comes after the Department of Justice published millions of files related to investigations into Epstein and his connections to prominent individuals.
According to court filings, the Justice Department inadvertently disclosed the identities of victims who were intended to remain anonymous. Officials had released over three million documents in January, but later discovered that critical personal information had not been properly redacted. The plaintiffs contend that approximately 100 survivors were publicly identified, a disclosure they describe as a serious violation of privacy and their rights.
The lawsuit also targets Google, accusing the company of continuing to make the leaked information accessible online. “Even after the government acknowledged the disclosure violated the rights of the survivors and withdrew the information, online entities like Google continuously republish it, refusing victims’ pleas to take it down,” the filing states. According to the case, victims’ personal details still appear in search results and AI-generated content, exacerbating emotional distress and safety concerns.
Plaintiffs say the exposure has reignited trauma, with survivors reporting threats, harassing calls and emails, and false accusations linking them to Epstein. Journalists reportedly found explicit images within the released files, further exposing identities. Epstein, who was convicted in 2008 for soliciting sex from underage girls, died in custody in 2019 before facing trial on additional sex trafficking charges.
The lawsuit alleges that the U.S. government violated the Privacy Act of 1974 by failing to safeguard sensitive data. Google, meanwhile, faces accusations of violating California laws on invasion of privacy, negligent infliction of emotional distress, and unlawful business practices.
