FCCPC Shuts Down Ikeja Electric Offices In Dramatic Clampdown Over Consumer Rights Violations

According to Ireporter Online, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has sealed the offices of Ikeja Electric over alleged violations of consumer rights and failure to comply with regulatory directives.

The Director of Surveillance and Investigation at the FCCPC, Bola Adeyinka, said the enforcement action was carried out in line with the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. Adeyinka explained that the decision to seal the facility came only after several engagements and multiple opportunities offered to the company to voluntarily comply with regulatory instructions.

She noted that the seal would remain in force until Ikeja Electric fully complies with directives issued by both the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and the FCCPC, and provides written confirmation of such compliance.

According to the Commission, NERC had earlier issued a binding order directing Ikeja Electric to unbundle a Maximum Demand account into 20 separate non-Maximum Demand accounts. The directive required the company to recognise 19 residential units and a service point owned by a complainant as distinct customer units, complete with appropriate metering and connection.

The FCCPC said Ikeja Electric failed to implement the decision, leaving the complainant without electricity for more than two and a half years despite paying all required charges and fulfilling every obligation demanded by the electricity provider. The prolonged outage reportedly prevented the complainant from utilising the nineteen residential units.

The Commission stated that it had repeatedly engaged Ikeja Electric regarding the unresolved NERC directive and even issued a detailed compliance order in April 2025 outlining steps and timelines for implementation. No progress was made. On 2 October 2025, the FCCPC issued a Compliance Notice giving the Disco seven business days to act, yet the company still did not comply.

Ikeja Electric has not issued an official response to the development at the time this report was filed, according to Ireporter Online.
