FCTA Strikes Hard: Criminal Hideouts in Apo Demolished in Major Security Crackdown
The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has demolished suspected criminal hideouts in the Apo Cadastral Zone, following intelligence reports identifying the area as a hotspot for escalating crime.
Mukhtar Galadima, Director of the FCTA Department of Development Control, described the zone as one of Abuja’s most notorious “dark spots,” noting that previous efforts to clear the area had been insufficient. He emphasized that the operation was part of a broader city-wide initiative to remove criminal elements and improve public safety.
“There are credible intelligence reports linking this location to violent crimes, including incidents in which residents have been killed,” Galadima said. “Unlike prior efforts where shanties were merely pushed aside, this operation involves total clearance and fencing of the site to prevent criminal regrouping.”
Galadima also hinted at a new strategy designed to ensure criminals cannot reestablish a presence in reclaimed areas, though he did not provide specific details.
Dr. Peter Olumuji, representing the Director of FCTA Security, Adamu Gwary, confirmed that the site had been a longstanding concern for security agencies. Residents had frequently reported illicit drug activities, armed robbery, and housebreaking in the district. He recalled a recent incident in which over 50 armed robbers attacked residents, only to be thwarted by prompt intervention from the FCT Police Command and allied security forces.
The demolition is part of a wider FCTA security strategy aimed at dismantling criminal enclaves and restoring law and order across high-risk neighborhoods in the capital. Officers from the Apo Division of the FCT Police Command, who oversaw the operation, praised the move as a decisive step toward enhancing community safety.
While some officers spoke off the record, they acknowledged that clearing the site would bring significant relief to residents who have endured persistent criminal activities in the area.
