Federal Government Take New Approach To Student Loan Disbursement

During a high-level meeting with the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Chris Maiyaki, Sawyerr emphasized the need to prevent any misallocation of funds.

Highlighting the rationale behind the decision, Sawyerr explained that loans would be repaid two years after the completion of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), ensuring a sustainable repayment model.

Funding for the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF) will be sourced from various avenues, including a percentage of government profits from oil and minerals, taxes from federal agencies, and education bonds, among others.

Despite these efforts to bolster educational financing, lecturers from the Academic Staff Union of Universities at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, voice opposition to the proposed student loan scheme. They argue that it could deprive public universities of crucial funds and exacerbate financial hardships for needy Nigerian students.

As the government seeks to strike a balance between accessibility and fiscal responsibility in higher education financing, transparency remains paramount to address stakeholders’ concerns and ensure equitable distribution of resources.
