FG Lands N2.8 Billion Google Grant For AI Advancement

During a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the grant, highlighting its potential to train Nigerian youth and support AI startups to create job opportunities and strengthen economic resilience nationwide.

“This partnership with Google underscores our dedication to making Nigeria a leader in AI innovation,” Tijani said. “By leveraging Google’s expertise, we’re equipping Nigerians with essential skills for the global digital economy. This marks a significant step toward a more inclusive and innovative future.”

The grant is part of Google’s larger $5.8 million initiative for digital skill development in sub-Saharan Africa, following Nigeria’s recent N100 million AI fund launched in collaboration with Google. Key sectors like healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance will benefit, with selected AI startups tackling local challenges to drive sustainable economic growth.

The Minister underscored the need for a strong AI ecosystem in Nigeria, emphasizing that strategic partnerships like Google’s are essential to achieving sustainable national growth.

Google EMEA President Matt Brittin highlighted that the grant would support Nigeria’s “3 Million Technical Talents” initiative, aiming to equip 20,000 Nigerians with AI skills, develop 125,000 educators, and empower Nigerian startups with N100 million, mentorship, and Google Cloud Credits.
