Finance Minister Sacked Over Alleged Corruption (DETAILS)

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo fired Charles Adu Boahen, minister of state for finance, on Monday after popular Ghanaian investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas circulated allegations of corruption.

According to a presidential statement, Mr. Adu Boahen was fired after being made aware of allegations leveled against him in an expose, and Mr. Akufo-Addo also referred the matter to the Special Prosecutor for further investigation.

Mr. Adu Boahen did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

Members of parliament have also called for the resignation of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, accusing him of corruption and economic mismanagement as the country faces its worst economic crisis in a generation.

The allegations leveled against Mr Adu Boahen did not appear to be related to those leveled against Mr Ofori-Atta previously.

Mr Adu Boahen was seen in a video posted online by Mr Anas, who also sent out a lengthy email with detailed allegations.

Reuters has not confirmed the authenticity of the video or the email’s content.

In a statement, Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia said Mr Adu Boahen was “apparently using my name, inter alia, to peddle influence and collect money from supposed investors.”

“I would like to state that if what the minister (Adu Boahen) is alleged to have said in the video is accurate, then his position as a minister of state is untenable.” “He should be fired immediately and investigated,” Mr Bawumia said.
