France Squad Hit By Illness Ahead Of World Cup Final As Five Players Contract Virus

France have been dealt a potential blow for their World Cup final against Argentina with five players reportedly out with a virus.

Dayot Upamecano and Adrien Rabiot were ruled out of France’s semi-final against Morocco due to illness, with Didier Deschamps blaming the continued use of air conditioning at stadiums in Qatar. This list has since grown to include Kingsley Coman, Raphael Varane, and Ibrahima Konate, who have all contracted the same virus and are thought to be suffering the most.

According to reports, the rest of the camp has been encouraged to use hand sanitizer and practice social distancing in order to avoid further infection. There was speculation that the illness was contracted during the quarter-final match against England, but this has been refuted, with the more likely explanation being the aforementioned air-conditioning.

Whatever the cause, the news is the worst possible preparation for Deschamps’ team, who will defend their world title in less than two days. To make matters worse for France, Aurelien Tchouameni and Theo Hernandez were reportedly absent from Friday’s training session due to hip and knee injuries, respectively.
