Frank Lampard Hails Coventry City’s ‘Unique’ Return After 25-Year Premier League Absence
Frank Lampard has described Coventry City’s return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence as a “unique” accomplishment, following the club’s confirmation of automatic promotion with matches still to play.
According to Ireporter Online, the Sky Blues secured a top-two finish in the EFL Championship after earning a 1-1 draw away at Blackburn Rovers, a result that guaranteed their place in the English top flight.
Lampard praised his players for exceeding expectations, particularly as a team without parachute payments, noting that achieving promotion with three games remaining underlines the exceptional nature of their campaign. He acknowledged the difficulty of securing a result at such a crucial stage of the season, highlighting the determination shown by the squad.
Reflecting on the journey, the 47-year-old manager expressed admiration for the team’s resilience, especially after their disappointment in last season’s play-offs against Sunderland. He revealed that internal discussions at the start of the season had centered on securing a play-off position, making their eventual automatic promotion even more remarkable.
Lampard, who assumed leadership at the CBS Arena in November 2024, described the achievement as one of the most significant moments of his career, both as a player and a manager. The former Chelsea and England national team midfielder also paid tribute to former manager Mark Robins for laying the groundwork that contributed to the club’s success.
He further expressed pride in his coaching staff and the collective effort that has driven the team’s resurgence, noting the emotional connection built during their time at the club.
With promotion secured, Lampard has shifted focus to the Championship title race, emphasizing the need for consistency in the remaining fixtures. Coventry currently hold an 11-point advantage over Ipswich Town, who have games in hand, with three matches left to conclude the season. He encouraged his players to briefly celebrate the milestone before maintaining their focus on finishing the campaign strongly.
