Fuel Scarcity Looms in Northern Nigeria Following Mokwa Bridge Collapse
The recent catastrophic flood in Mokwa, Niger State, which led to the collapse of a critical bridge connecting Southwest and Northern Nigeria, is threatening to trigger a fuel scarcity in Abuja and northern regions ahead of the Eid al-Adha holidays.
Although the official death toll stands at 153 according to emergency agencies, local reports suggest a higher number of casualties.
The damaged bridge has disrupted fuel distribution routes, leaving petroleum product trucks stranded. A senior MRS official confirmed that this would affect fuel availability during the June 6 and 9 public holidays, although prices would remain at ₦895 per litre.
Similarly, a source at the NNPC Limited warned that unless supply is redirected from Port Harcourt or Warri, scarcity is likely.
However, leaders of key oil marketers’ associations offered mixed reactions:
-
Billy Gillis-Harry, President of the Petroleum Products Retail Outlet Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN), downplayed the threat, stating that members will leverage alternate supply routes to ensure nationwide fuel availability.
-
James Tor, National Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), acknowledged the disruption and called on the federal government to promptly repair the Mokwa Bridge or open alternative routes to prevent widespread shortages.
The warning comes as Nigeria’s fuel prices were recently adjusted downward, ranging between ₦875–₦910 per litre, and the country prepares for the Eid festivities.
