As African economies continue to evolve, significant differences remain in the strength of national currencies, particularly in terms of exchange rates. Latest data for March 2026 highlights the ten strongest currencies across the continent, reflecting varying degrees of economic stability, trade influence, and monetary policy effectiveness.
Topping the list is the Tunisian Dinar, valued at 2.93 per unit, supported by Tunisia’s relatively stable economy and robust trade position in North Africa. The Libyan Dinar follows at 6.38, maintaining its role as the official currency despite years of economic challenges linked to prolonged instability. Morocco’s Dirham, at 9.34, mirrors the country’s balanced economy, driven by tourism, agriculture, and phosphate exports.
In West Africa, Ghana’s Cedi ranks fifth at 10.95, bolstered by the nation’s strong export base in gold and cocoa. Botswana’s Pula, meaning “rain” in Setswana, holds the sixth position at 13.78, symbolizing wealth and stability in a diamond-backed economy. The Seychellois Rupee, at 14.35, is strengthened by the island nation’s tourism-driven revenue streams.
Eritrea’s Nakfa, introduced in 1997 and valued at 15.00, demonstrates the country’s effort to maintain monetary independence. The South African Rand, at 17.09, continues to play a pivotal role in regional trade and commerce. Eswatini’s Lilangeni, pegged to the Rand, ranks ninth at 17.16, reflecting regional monetary cooperation, while Lesotho’s Lot, closely linked to the Rand, rounds out the list at 17.17, supporting domestic trade and the national monetary system.
